Dan Rather, the former anchor of the CBS Evening News, made a return to CBS for an interview on CBS Sunday Morning. This appearance comes just days before the release of a Netflix documentary detailing his life and career at the network. Rather spent a remarkable 44 years at CBS, with 24 of those years being as the anchor of the evening news. His departure from the network was clouded by controversy, as an investigation into then-President George W. Bush’s military record questioned his journalistic methods.

During the interview with correspondent Lee Cowan, Rather expressed his deep love for journalism and the news industry. He stated that he has always wanted to be a reporter and that every morning, he wakes up asking, “Where’s the story?” This passion for reporting has been a driving force throughout his career, even after leaving CBS. Rather continued to do investigative journalism and major interviews for HDNet, a digital cable and satellite television network.

Rather believes that at the heart of every true reporter is the desire to uncover news that those in power don’t want the public to know. He emphasized the importance of real news and the responsibility of journalists to dig deep and report on stories that matter, regardless of the size of the audience. This commitment to journalism has guided Rather throughout his career, leading him to adapt to changing venues and reporting methods to stay relevant in the industry.

As Rather looked back on his career, he acknowledged that his legacy would not be solely defined by his professional achievements. Instead, he believed that what truly mattered in life were the relationships with family and friends. Despite his successful career in journalism, Rather understood that it was the personal connections and memories that would ultimately define his legacy.
