As the newly released films find their footing in the box office, this first weekend of the year promises to be more successful than the same period last year. Disney’s highly anticipated release, Mufasa: The Lion King, is currently engaged in a close competition with Paramount Pictures’ Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Estimates suggest that Mufasa is on track to earn between $23 million and $24 million, while Sonic 3 is projected to generate around $20 million. This denotes a positive trend for the box office, especially considering that Mufasa is achieving its first No. 1 ranking among 3-day weekend releases, while Sonic 3 previously claimed the top spot in the first two weekends of its debut.
Historically, weekend box office numbers often serve as an important indicator of both the industry’s health and the individual films’ performance. Notably, Mufasa’s five-day total from December 25-29, which amounted to a remarkable $60.9 million, marks a strong interest from audiences. This weekend’s projected gross from the top five films is expected to reach approximately $78 million, significantly overshadowing last year’s mere $56 million. This increase reflects a generally enhanced audience appetite, even amidst a season lacking major new releases.
Mufasa’s Theater Count and Projections
Mufasa is currently screening in a substantial 3,925 theaters, further facilitating its potential to attract more viewers. Analysts believe that by Sunday, the film’s total gross could reach as high as $168.7 million, strengthening its foothold as a box office contender. Simultaneously, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, presented in 3,746 locations, could achieve a running total of $186.3 million, just a mere $4.5 million shy of passing Sonic the Hedgehog 2’s previous record of $190.8 million. The rivalry between these two films has sparked significant interest and is indicative of the ongoing competition that marks the animation and family-friendly genres.
Rounding out the box office top five is Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu, which, in its second weekend, is expected to earn approximately $12.3 million. While this represents a decline of 43% from its opening weekend, it brings its total gross to about $68.5 million, a commendable feat considering it has yet to receive any major award nominations during this awards season. With nominations for four Critics Choice Awards in its corner, the film is garnering enough buzz to sustain interest.
In fourth place, Disney’s Moana 2 is nearing the significant $1 billion mark, accumulating a total of $424.7 million over its sixth weekend. This sequel to the beloved original film has not only enjoyed commercial success but is also vying for accolades; it’s nominated for Best Animated Motion Picture at the Golden Globes.
The seventh weekend for Universal’s Wicked is marked by a dip of 52%, leading to a 3-day total of $9.5 million. Despite this setback, the film has managed a running total nearing $450 million. Released on PVOD on December 31, Wicked stands as a crowd-pleaser with multiple Golden Globe nominations, including categories for Best Musical/Comedy Feature and leading actress Cynthia Erivo.
Indie Films Make Their Mark
Lastly, Searchlight’s biopic A Complete Unknown, which delves into the life of Bob Dylan, has shown remarkable performance in its second weekend, securing $7.5 million, a 36% decline, bringing its total to $41.2 million. This total positions it favorably as the highest-grossing title for Searchlight since the merger with Disney-Fox in 2019.
While the competition among these films is fierce, the overall rise in box office revenues suggests that audiences are ready and eager to return to theaters. With notable titles rolling out alongside award nominations, both studios and viewers have a promising outlook for the remainder of the year.
