James Gunn, the acclaimed director behind successful projects such as Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad, has recently found himself at the center of a fan conspiracy theory regarding his involvement in the DCEU. The theory suggests that Gunn had planned all along to remove Henry Cavill from the role of Superman. However, Gunn quickly shut down these rumors, stating that he never had any intention of replacing Cavill.
The confusion stemmed from an interview with Nathan Fillion, who shared how he found out about his casting as Guy Gardner in the new DC film. Fillion mistakenly implied that Gunn informed him of the role at the premiere party after The Suicide Squad, leading fans to believe that Gunn was already working on rebooting the DCEU at that time. Gunn clarified that Fillion had misspoken and that the casting revelation actually occurred during the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 premiere party.
Despite the speculation surrounding Gunn’s supposed plan to replace Cavill as Superman, the director emphasized that it was never his intention. He highlighted the fact that when he was hired to write the new Superman story, it was always pitched as a fresh take on the character. Gunn addressed the conspiracy theory, questioning how it made sense for him to lie about not planning to replace Cavill, especially since the outcome would have been the same in the end.
With the executive shakeup at DC Studios, Cavill reprised his role as Superman in an end credits scene from Black Adam. However, as Gunn and Peter Safran took over and decided to reboot the universe, they announced their plans to recast Superman. David Corenswet was chosen to portray the new Superman, with filming already in progress. The upcoming film also features Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, and María Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer. The ensemble cast includes Skyler Gisondo, Sara Sampaio, Sean Gunn, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Isabel Merced, and Fillion.
