Kevin Costner’s ambitious project, Horizon: An American Saga, seems to be facing significant challenges. Costner poured nearly $40 million of his own money into the production of this film, but unfortunately, it has not been able to yield positive outcomes so far. Despite his dedication to the project, the movie has failed to make a significant impact at the box office and has not managed to impress critics. The premier of the Western saga in theaters in late June did not attract much attention, leading to a lackluster response from audiences.
The troubles for Horizon: An American Saga seem to be escalating as the second part of the movie, intended to be a three-hour epic, has now been pulled from its upcoming theatrical release. Originally scheduled to hit theaters on August 16, the release of Horizon: Chapter 2 has been cancelled without a clear indication of when it will eventually be released. The decision to halt the release was made to give audiences more time to discover the first part of the saga, suggesting that the initial installment did not perform as expected.
In a statement provided to Variety, a spokesperson for New Line Cinema mentioned that the decision to delay the release of Horizon: Chapter 2 was to allow viewers to watch the first part of the movie on PVOD (Premium Video on Demand) and Max platforms. Despite positive remarks from Kevin Costner’s production company, Territory Pictures, about the audience’s response to the film, it appears that the overall reception has not been as enthusiastic as anticipated. The statement also acknowledged the support from moviegoers and theater owners but did not address the specific reasons for the delay.
With a hefty budget of $100 million, Horizon was filmed in Utah on a set that Costner intends to expand into a larger movie filming complex. The actor confessed to injecting $38 million of his own funds into the initial film, which unfortunately only managed to earn $11 million during its opening weekend and $24 million in total. Despite his earlier success with Dances with Wolves, which earned him two Academy Awards, Costner’s current venture has not been able to replicate that level of achievement.
The future of Horizon: An American Saga remains uncertain as the release date for the second part of the movie is in limbo. While there are hints of potential opportunities for the film to reach a wider audience, the setbacks faced by the production raise doubts about its commercial viability. The involvement of notable actors like Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Jena Malone, and even Costner’s own son Hayes has not been able to salvage the project’s reputation. It remains to be seen if Costner’s dedication to this project will eventually pay off or if it will be remembered as a costly misstep in his career.
