The just-ended 2023-2024 season of Broadway showed a slight stability in terms of attendance compared to the previous year, according to the data released by the Broadway League. Despite this, the total attendance for the season remains nearly 17% below pre-pandemic levels, indicating that Broadway is still struggling to fully recover from the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic. The 71 productions that graced the Broadway stages from May 22, 2023, to May 19, 2024, collectively grossed $1.54 billion, with a total attendance of about 12.3 million. These numbers represent a small decline in box office earnings from the previous season, with a 2% decrease in total revenue. The average ticket price for the season was $125.27, which was approximately 2% lower than the previous year.

While the numbers for the 2023-2024 season show some positive signs, they also highlight the ongoing challenges that Broadway continues to face. The fact that attendance levels are still significantly below pre-pandemic levels is a cause for concern, especially considering that the 2018-2019 season set a record with a total gross of $1.8 billion and 14.8 million in attendance. The Interim President of The Broadway League, Jason Laks, acknowledged that while the season was successful in many ways, there is still work to be done to fully revive Broadway to its former glory.

One of the positive aspects highlighted by Jason Laks is the incredible variety of plays, musicals, and specials that Broadway has to offer. The 2023-2024 season included a total of 71 productions, with 39 of them being new productions. This diverse lineup included 21 musicals (16 original, five revivals), 16 plays (12 original, four revivals), and two special engagements, showcasing a range of stories and performances for audiences to enjoy. Laks emphasized that Broadway remains a dynamic space for both audiences and artists to explore diverse worlds and narratives together, catering to a wide range of tastes and preferences.

Despite the challenges faced by Broadway, the box office performance for the final week of the 2023-2024 season showed some promising trends. The 35 shows currently running on Broadway grossed a total of $36,381,958 for the week ending May 29, marking a 2% increase from the previous week and an 11% increase from the same period last year. Attendance for the week was 292,642, with 91% of available seats filled, indicating a growing interest in live theater. Additionally, several productions managed to gross over $1 million for the week, including popular shows like Hamilton, Moulin Rouge!, and Wicked, demonstrating the enduring appeal of these productions to audiences.

While the 2023-2024 Broadway season saw some positive developments in terms of box office performance and audience response, it is clear that Broadway is still on the path to recovery following the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. The industry will need to continue to innovate and adapt to changing audience preferences in order to regain its former glory and attract a broader range of theatergoers.
