In a universe filled with superheroes and villains, it is interesting to imagine a scenario where Robert Downey Jr. took on the role of the villain rather than the iconic hero, Iron Man. According to Jon Favreau, director of the first Iron Man movie, Downey Jr. had also auditioned for the role of Doctor Doom in Fantastic Four back in 2005. It is hard to imagine anyone else embodying the role of Tony Stark after witnessing Downey Jr.’s performance that seemed tailor-made for the character.
Favreau described Downey Jr. as the “puzzle piece that made it all work” in Iron Man. The chemistry between the actor and the character was undeniable, with Favreau recalling the moment he knew Downey Jr. was the right choice for the role. This decision not only made Favreau’s life easier but also set the tone for the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Kevin Feige, the mastermind behind the MCU, credited much of the success of the franchise to the dynamic between Favreau and Downey Jr. The tone set by the first Iron Man movie became the template for what the MCU would become. Feige acknowledged that without Downey Jr., the MCU would not be in the position it is today. The actor’s portrayal of Tony Stark not only resonated with audiences but also inspired other actors to join the franchise.
Robert Downey Jr. went on to portray Iron Man in 10 movies, solidifying his place in cinematic history as one of the most iconic superheroes of all time. His portrayal of Tony Stark was so impactful that it paved the way for other actors like Chris Evans to join the MCU as Captain America. Downey Jr.’s journey as Iron Man culminated in Avengers: Endgame, where he made the ultimate sacrifice to save the universe.
Despite his unforgettable performance as Iron Man, Kevin Feige confirmed that Downey Jr. will not be returning to the MCU after Avengers: Endgame. This marked the end of an era for both the character of Tony Stark and the actor who brought him to life. Downey Jr.’s contribution to the MCU cannot be overstated, as his portrayal of Iron Man set the standard for what a superhero could be on the big screen.
