The British Grierson Awards, known for honoring documentary filmmaking excellence, have recently announced their nominations for this year’s ceremony. Among the nominees is the Oscar and BAFTA-winning Ukrainian feature film, 20 Days in Mariupol. This film, directed by Mstyslav Chernov, follows the filmmaker’s experiences in the besieged city at the start of the Ukraine War. Not only is it nominated for Best Current Affairs Documentary, but it is also up for Best Cinema Documentary, showcasing the powerful impact of Chernov’s storytelling.
Apart from 20 Days in Mariupol, other standout nominees include documentaries on various subjects ranging from politics to sports. Projects like Wham!, Boris Johnson, and Ronnie O’Sullivan: The Edge of Everything have all received two nominations each. Wham! by Netflix, The Rise and Fall of Boris Johnson by Channel 4, and Ronnie O’Sullivan: The Edge of Everything by Prime Video highlight the diverse range of topics covered by this year’s nominations. Additionally, Channel 4’s Me and the Voice in My Head, focusing on Joe Trancini’s borderline personality disorder, has secured an impressive three nominations, including one for Trancini as Best Presenter.
The coveted Best Documentary Series category sees a fierce competition with Channel 4 dominating the shortlist. Shows like To Catch a Copper and Evacuation showcase the channel’s commitment to compelling storytelling. Netflix’s American Nightmare and BBC’s Cold Case Investigators: Solving Britain’s Sex Crimes also stand out in this category, highlighting the diversity of themes explored in documentary series. The BBC leads the awards shortlist with 28 entries, closely followed by Channel 4, Netflix, and other streaming platforms.
