Neon’s latest release, Cuckoo, directed by Tilman Singer, made a strong debut over the weekend with a $3+ million opening at the box office. Despite not reaching the heights of Longlegs’ $22 million debut, Cuckoo is on target to capture audience attention with its Alpine-set horror story starring Hunter Schafer and Dan Stevens. The R-rated film opened in 1,503 theaters and secured the 9th spot at the domestic box office.

Schafer’s portrayal of the troubled 17-year-old Gretchen, who moves to the beautiful German Alps after her mother’s death, has been praised by critics. As Gretchen navigates her new life with her father and his new family, she encounters mysterious occurrences and unsettling visions, ultimately uncovering a shocking secret. Stevens delivers a compelling performance as Herr König, adding a menacing yet intriguing presence to the narrative.

Amidst a stream of studio wide releases and tentpoles, Longlegs, directed by Osgood Perkins, continues to hold its ground in the box office. In its fifth week, the film secured the 10th spot with an estimated $2 million on 1,310 screens, bringing its total gross to $71 million. Longlegs’ ability to maintain its audience interest in a competitive market is a testament to its staying power.

Focus Features’ Didi and A24’s Sing Sing are also drawing in audiences, with both films showing strong numbers in their respective releases. Sean Wang’s Sundance winner expanded to 200 theaters in its third week, earning an estimated $650k over the weekend and reaching a cumulative total of $1.6 million. Sing Sing, directed by Greg Kewdar, expanded to 39 screens in its fifth week, grossing $227k for a total of $822k.

Sony Pictures Classics’ Kneecap, a pseudo-biopic about an Irish rap trio, continued to perform well in its second week, bringing in $103.4k on 204 screens. Oscilloscope’s CatVideoFest 2024 also saw success in its sophomore frame, grossing $102k on 55 screens. Additionally, Metrograph Pictures’ Good One made its limited release debut, grossing $30k at three locations with promising reviews and sold-out showings.

Good One, directed by India Donaldson and starring newcomer Lily Collias, is set to expand into all major markets by early September following its successful limited release. The film’s positive reception and growing audience interest indicate a promising trajectory for its future box office performance. As more audiences discover and engage with Good One, its presence in the box office landscape is likely to solidify in the weeks to come.
