Disney/Pixar’s highly anticipated sequel, Inside Out 2, is already creating buzz in the industry. With tracking data indicating that it is set to have the highest opening at the domestic box office year-to-date, surpassing recent releases like Dune Part Two and Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire, the film is expected to have a 3-day opening between $80M-$85M. Scheduled to debut over the Fathers Day weekend of June 14-16, Inside Out 2 marks a significant comeback for Pixar in the post-Covid era.
The sequel to the 2015 hit, Inside Out, delves back into the mind of the now-teenage Riley, voiced by Kensington Tallman. This time around, her emotions – Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust, and Sadness – are joined by new characters Envy and Anxiety, voiced by Ayo Edebiri and Maya Hawke, respectively. The storyline follows Riley as she navigates the complexities of adolescence, with her emotions struggling to keep up with her evolving feelings.
At April’s CinemaCon, the first 35 minutes of Inside Out 2 were screened for exhibitors, eliciting great laughs and positive feedback. Many are hailing the sequel as a significant improvement over the original film, which won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature. Directed by Pete Docter and Ronnie Del Carmen, the first Inside Out was a critical and commercial success, grossing $356.9M domestically and $858.8M worldwide.
Inside Out 2 appears to be resonating particularly well with teen girls and moms, a demographic that could drive strong word-of-mouth and repeat viewings. With its universal themes of growing up, navigating emotions, and embracing change, the film is positioned to appeal to a wide audience of all ages. Pixar’s ability to blend heartfelt storytelling with visually stunning animation is sure to captivate viewers once again.
The anticipation surrounding Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out 2 is palpable. With high box office projections, an engaging storyline, beloved characters, and early positive reactions, the sequel is poised to be a major success. As audiences eagerly await its release, it’s clear that Pixar has another hit on its hands with Inside Out 2.
