Spanish Filmmakers Sweep the 2024 Platino Awards

The eleventh Platino Awards ceremony held at the El Gran Tlachco theater in Xcaret Park, Riviera Maya, was a night to remember for Spanish filmmakers. Basque filmmaker Estibaliz Urresola Solaguren’s debut film, “20,000 Species Of Bees,” and J. A. Bayona’s survival drama for Netflix, “Society Of The Snow,” stole the show by receiving the top honors of the evening. Bayona’s film, “Society Of The Snow,” tells the gripping tale of the 45 people who were on board Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 on October 13, 1972. Tragedy struck when the pilot made a fatal error, crashing the plane into the Andes mountains, resulting in the death of 12 individuals. The survivors faced unimaginable challenges, including resorting to cannibalism to survive. Based on the book by Pablo Vierci, the film has been selected as Spain’s entry for the Best International Feature Oscar.
