The European Film Academy has recently expressed its deep concerns regarding the safety and well-being of Belarusian filmmaker and activist, Andrei Gnyot. Gnyot is currently detained in Serbia and is facing the imminent threat of extradition back to Belarus. This comes as a result of his involvement in the 2020 protests against the rigged elections that re-elected President Alexander Lukashenko for a sixth term.
Although the official charge against Gnyot is tax evasion, his supporters firmly believe that these accusations are purely politically motivated. They argue that he is being targeted by Lukashenko’s regime for his opposition and activism. The European Film Academy has emphasized that Gnyot could face severe consequences, including imprisonment, torture, and even the death penalty if he is sent back to Belarus.
The EFA has called upon international human rights organizations and advocacy groups to intervene in this matter. They have urged the Serbian authorities to prevent the extradition of Gnyot to Belarus and to secure his immediate release. The situation is critical, and swift action is required to ensure Gnyot’s safety.

The Federation of Film Academies Europe (FACE) has been launched by the European Film Academy and 20 film academies across Europe. This new pan-European film body aims to formalize the relationships between member academies and strengthen collaboration. The founding members include prestigious institutions from countries such as Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Germany, Greece, Spain, Switzerland, and Ukraine, among others.
