Chinese writer and director Jing Zou recently made waves in the film industry with her feature film project, A Girl Unknown, which won the top prize at the Next Step initiative of Cannes Critics’ Week. The film is a poignant exploration of the true phenomenon of generations of girls abandoned in China due to the country’s one-child policy. Spanning from the age of six to her thirties, the protagonist navigates through three different families, showcasing themes of existential pain, self-discovery, and learning to love. This intimate coming-of-age story has captured the hearts of audiences and critics alike.
Born in 1984, Jing Zou is a talented Chinese director and writer currently based between Shanghai and Los Angeles. Her journey into filmmaking began when she started working at Shanghai International TV station on documentaries as a director and editor. Despite coming from a literature background, Zou found her passion in visual storytelling and has since made a name for herself in the industry. Her previous short film, Lili Alone (Duo Li), also received recognition, winning the Leitz Cine Discovery Prize at Critics’ Prize in 2021.
A Girl Unknown was one of the 10 projects selected to participate in this year’s edition of the Next Step program. Launched in 2014, the initiative aims to support directors who have transitioned from short films to their first feature project. Participants benefit from a development workshop at the Moulin d’Andé artists residence in Normandy, followed by meetings with producers and sales agents in Paris. The prestigious Next Step award includes a 2,500€ endowment and an invitation to attend the Cannes Film Festival, providing invaluable exposure for emerging filmmakers.
This year’s jury, comprised of industry professionals such as Roxane Arnold, Marion Delord, Markus Duffner, and Ioana Stais, recognized the exceptional quality of A Girl Unknown and awarded it the top prize. Past winners of the Next Step program have gone on to achieve critical acclaim, with projects like Manning Walker’s How to Have Sex receiving accolades at Cannes Un Certain Regard. Notable films supported by Next Step include Universal Language by Matthew Rankin, Some Rain Must Fall by Qiu Yang, and Arcadia by Yorgos Zois, all of which have made significant impact in the festival circuit.
