The Thai studio GDH has recently collaborated with Bad Genius director Baz Poonpiriya to establish a new production house called BASK. This new venture aims to bring a fresh perspective on Thai and Asian culture to global audiences by working closely with U.S.-based producers.

Through BASK, Poonpiriya and GDH will co-develop, co-finance, and co-produce projects with established U.S.-based studios and producers. The partnership has already attracted attention from notable figures in the industry, such as director Justin Lin from the Fast & Furious franchise, and producer Anita Gou from Kindred Spirit (The Farewell).

Vanridee Pongsittisak, a top Thai producer, will take the lead in overseeing the joint venture from GDH’s side. Pongsittisak expressed the studio’s commitment to exploring a variety of genres and narratives that have the potential to resonate with global audiences. Additionally, they aim to provide a platform for voices that have been historically overlooked but harbor deep passion for storytelling.

Pongsittisak, known for producing the critically acclaimed Thai film Bad Genius and this year’s box office hit How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies, has already made significant strides in the industry. Poonpiriya, on the other hand, is determined to establish himself as an international voice that amplifies the voices of others. After the success of Bad Genius, a thrilling tale of exam cheating, Poonpiriya worked with renowned director Wong Kar-Wai on the road trip drama One For the Road, which garnered recognition at the Sundance Film Festival.

In Poonpiriya’s words, having a louder and more authentic voice means being able to reach and represent a wider audience. With the establishment of BASK, there is a unique opportunity to showcase diverse perspectives and stories from Thai and Asian cultures on a global scale. The collaboration between GDH, Poonpiriya, and their U.S.-based partners signals a new era of cross-cultural storytelling that promises to captivate audiences worldwide.
