In a significant deal that was finalized leading up to the Cannes market, Apple Original Films has acquired the global rights to Tenzing. This new project features A-list actors Tom Hiddleston and Willem Dafoe in starring roles. The question on everyone’s mind was whether American buyers would show interest in Cannes market projects, and it seems that the answer has been provided.
Tenzing, produced by the Oscar-winning See-Saw Films, revolves around the remarkable life of Sherpa Tenzing Norgay and his historic ascent of Mount Everest in 1953 alongside New Zealander Edmund Hillary. The film is helmed by filmmaker Jennifer Peedom, who possesses the exclusive rights to narrate Tenzing’s story based on her close ties with his family and the Sherpa community.
The lead role of Tenzing Norgay is still up for grabs, with BAFTA-nominated Tom Hiddleston portraying Sir Edmund Hillary and four-time Oscar nominee Willem Dafoe embodying English expedition leader Colonel John Hunt. The screenplay is penned by Luke Davies, known for his work on “Lion,” while producers include See-Saw Films’ trio Liz Watts, Emile Sherman, and Iain Canning, alongside Jennifer Peedom and Luke Davies.
Filming for Tenzing is scheduled to commence in the spring of 2025, with Rocket Science managing international sales. The project boasts a budget estimated at $25 million, and while it promises gripping climbing sequences, it primarily focuses on character development rather than action-packed Everest-style thrills.
The plot centers on Tibetan native Tenzing Norgay and New Zealand mountaineer Edmund Hillary, both of whom were outsiders on a British Expedition. Against all odds, they achieved the unimaginable by conquering Mount Everest’s summit. Tenzing’s journey involved navigating through political obstacles and hazardous weather conditions, all while maintaining a sense of humor, warmth, and respect for the sacred Mountain Goddess, Chomolungma.
Through this acquisition, Apple Original Films has further expanded its diverse and captivating portfolio, promising audiences an engaging and emotionally resonant cinematic experience with Tenzing.
