Millie Bobby Brown, best known for her role as Eleven in the hit series Stranger Things, is taking on a new project as she develops a feature adaptation of her debut novel, Nineteen Steps, for Netflix. The novel, published in September 2023, is set during World War II and draws on the experiences of Brown’s own grandmother. The story follows Nellie Morris, an 18-year-old girl living in the East London neighborhood of Bethnal Green, as she navigates the challenges of wartime life.

Brown will not only produce the film under her PCMA banner but is also eyeing a starring role. The screenplay will be adapted by four-time Oscar nominee Anthony McCarten, known for his work on films like The Theory of Everything and Darkest Hour. Jonathan Eirich will produce for Rideback, with Nick Reynolds serving as the executive producer.

Storyline

Nineteen Steps will explore the emotional turmoil faced by Nellie as she grapples with the threat of bombings, rationing, and the pain of being separated from loved ones during the war. The novel’s historical core is the Bethnal Green Tube disaster, a tragic event that claimed the lives of 173 people seeking shelter during an air raid.

Brown rose to fame with her role in Stranger Things, earning multiple award nominations for her performance. She has also been seen in various Netflix productions such as the Enola Holmes films and Damsel. Her upcoming project, The Electric State, will see her starring alongside Chris Pratt and is set to premiere in March 2025.

Anthony McCarten, the writer behind the screenplay adaptation of Nineteen Steps, is known for his work on biopics such as Bohemian Rhapsody and The Theory of Everything. His upcoming projects include The Collaboration, a film exploring the friendship between artists Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat.

Rideback Productions, the company behind the project, has produced successful films like Disney’s Aladdin and The LEGO Movie franchises. Currently, the company is working on Disney’s new Lilo & Stitch film, set to hit theaters next summer. Founded by producer Dan Lin, Rideback is now led by Jonathan Eirich and Michael LoFaso.

Millie Bobby Brown’s upcoming project, Nineteen Steps, promises to be a poignant exploration of life during World War II. With a talented team of producers and a compelling storyline, this adaptation has the potential to be a captivating film for audiences to enjoy.
