The highly anticipated opening night of “Life and Trust,” the sequel to the popular immersive theater production “Sleep No More,” drew in a star-studded crowd eager to experience the unique performance. With the original show running since 2011 and gaining a dedicated following at the McKittrick Hotel in Chelsea, the curiosity surrounding the new production from Emursive was palpable. The Faustian tale set in the Great Depression required audience members to physically follow the action across six underground levels of a Financial District skyscraper.
During Thursday night’s premiere, guests such as Murray Hill, Bridget Everett, Lorna Luft, David Byrne, Darren Aronofsky, Gina Gershon, Joel Grey, Ira Glass, and Rachel Antonoff were in attendance, adding to the excitement of the evening. However, some audience members encountered challenges as a celebrity encounter caused a brief halt in the show’s progression. According to reports, a group of attendees following a character called Mephisto down the stairs got caught behind a group of celebrities chatting, leading to a disruption in the flow of the performance. It took an impatient audience member’s outburst to clear the way and allow the show to continue.
Comedian Jackie Hoffman added to the fun by joking about a particularly steamy scene involving a cowboy and a person dressed as a horse, referencing Daniel Radcliffe’s past role in “Equus.” Reports also teased an even more provocative moment featuring a “homoerotic boxing match.” The evening was further enhanced by the presence of Danya Taymor, Amber Ardolino, Daniel K. Isaac, Claybourne Elder, and Montego Glover, who all contributed to the vibrant atmosphere of the event.
Overall, the opening night of “Life and Trust” proved to be a star-studded affair filled with unexpected encounters, amusing moments, and captivating performances. The seamless blend of immersive storytelling and celebrity presence created an unforgettable experience for all in attendance, setting the stage for a successful run of the show.
