Gershkovich was arrested in Russia in March 2023 during a reporting trip to Yekaterinburg. He was accused of collaborating with the CIA, accusations that both Gershkovich and the WSJ have vehemently denied. Despite international outcry and claims of innocence, he was sentenced to 16 years in a high-security penal colony. This case has gained attention as Gershkovich is the first U.S. journalist to be convicted of espionage since the Cold War era.

In December 2022, a similar exchange took place involving U.S. basketball star Brittney Griner and arms dealer Viktor Bout. However, there have been criticisms and regrets surrounding these exchanges, with figures like Biden expressing disappointment at certain individuals not being included. Griner, for instance, has pledged to continue advocating for the release of her fellow Americans held in Russian prisons.
