Kevin Smith, known for his work on the cult classic Clerks, is back with his 16th and “most personal film to date”, The 4:30 Movie. Set in the summer of 1986, the coming-of-age film tells the story of three 16-year-old friends who spend their Saturdays sneaking into movies at the local cineplex. When one of the friends, Brian, invites the girl of his dreams, Melody, to see an R-rated film, chaos ensues as a theater manager and teen rivalries get in the way of his plans.
Smith has described The 4:30 Movie as a “poignant comic valentine to moviegoing and the youth of the ’80s.” He has shared his personal connection to the film, stating that it is a tribute to the John Hughes coming-of-age movies he grew up watching. The film was shot in the same movie theater where Smith watched movies as a child in his hometown of Highlands, NJ. Smith saved the theater from demolition in 2022 and turned it into Smodcastle Cinemas.
The 4:30 Movie boasts an impressive ensemble cast including Justin Long, Rosario Dawson, Jason Biggs, Jason Lee, Method Man, Kate Micucci, Rachel Dratch, Sam Richardson, Adam Pally, Jason Mewes, Brian O’Halloran, Jeff Anderson, and Harley Quinn Smith. Each actor brings their own unique flair to the film, enhancing the nostalgic feel of the 1980s setting.
Saban Films is set to release The 4:30 Movie in theaters nationwide on September 13th. However, fans have the opportunity to attend the world premiere on August 24th at Smodcastle Cinemas, where the film was shot. Tickets for the premiere are currently on sale at The430Movie.movie. Smith encourages fans to embrace the escapism of reel life when real life becomes overwhelming.
Kevin Smith’s The 4:30 Movie promises to be a heartfelt homage to 1980s teen movies, filled with laughter, nostalgia, and star-studded performances. Smith’s personal connection to the film and dedication to preserving the essence of his childhood movie theater adds a layer of authenticity to the project. Fans of Smith’s work and 1980s cinema alike are sure to be in for a treat when they experience The 4:30 Movie on the big screen.
