Broadway is currently experiencing a surge in ticket sales leading up to the highly anticipated Tony Awards ceremony. Last week, box office numbers were up 7% from the previous week, with a total of 35 shows grossing an impressive $36,011,651. This marks a 16% increase from the same time last season, showcasing the growing popularity of Broadway productions.

Nine shows, including the two most Tony-nominated productions, sold out last week. Among them were Stereophonic and Hell’s Kitchen, each receiving 13 nominations for the upcoming awards show. Ticket prices for these in-demand musicals exceeded $200 per seat, with average prices hovering around $140. Additionally, other sell-out productions like Merrily We Roll Along and Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club boasted average ticket prices well above the overall average of $124.

Notable performances from last week include Best Play nominee Stereophonic grossing $872,337 and Best Musical nominee Hell’s Kitchen bringing in $1,638,208. Merrily We Roll Along had the highest average ticket price of the week at $228, while Cabaret followed closely behind at $222.28. Despite fierce competition, shows like An Enemy of the People, Hadestown, Hamilton, Mother Play, and The Outsiders also managed to fill their seats and bring in substantial revenue.

Two recent additions to Broadway’s lineup include the revival of Home and Ben Platt’s concert residency, with both shows drawing in audiences and earning commendable box office numbers. Additionally, Uncle Vanya saw a significant increase in revenue after Steve Carell’s return to the stage, bouncing back from a week of reduced sales. However, productions like The Heart of Rock and Roll and Patriots struggled to attract audiences, earning the lowest grosses of the week.

As Broadway enters its third week of the new season, total grosses have reached $104,969,902, with an overall attendance of 858,581. These numbers indicate a promising start to the season, setting the stage for even greater success in the weeks to come. With the Tony Awards fast approaching, all eyes are on Broadway as audiences eagerly anticipate the recognition of the industry’s top talent.
