The spring break season is in full swing, with 8% of K-12 students taking a break and 1% of college students off. This weekend at the box office is a mix of genres and films fighting for the top spot. However, the spotlight is on 20th Century Studios’ upcoming release, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, which is expected to have a $50 million-plus opening during the second weekend of May.

A24’s Civil War, which has already earned $27 million by Monday after a $1.9 million haul yesterday, is currently holding the No. 1 position. However, it will face stiff competition from Universal’s Abigail, directed by Radio Silence. Both films are projected to make around $12 million each, marking a 53% decline for Civil War.

Abigail stars Melissa Barrera, Angus Cloud, Dan Stevens, Kathryn Newton, William Catlett, and Kevin Durand. The movie follows a group of kidnappers who decide to abduct a 12-year-old ballerina named Abigail, the daughter of a powerful underworld figure, for a ransom of $50 million. As they find themselves trapped inside an isolated mansion with the young girl, they begin to realize that she is no ordinary child.

Abigail will be screened in 3,300 theaters and will share Imax auditoriums with Sony/Crunchyroll’s anime Spy x Family Code: White and the Nathaniel Kahn-directed documentary Deep Sky. The movie is set to attract the 18-34 age group, and current reviews on Rotten Tomatoes stand at a fresh rating of 82%. The film will also share PLF screens with Lionsgate’s The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, directed by Guy Ritchie, based on true events during WWII involving Winston Churchill and author Ian Fleming.

The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare and Spy x Family Code: White

The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare will open at around $6 million, similar to The Covenant, with an A- CinemaScore from sneaks last weekend. Meanwhile, Spy x Family Code: White, directed by Takashi Katagiri, will be available in both Japanese with English subtitles and dubbed in English. The movie is based on a manga series and features a stand-alone storyline with secret agents, deadly assassins, and telepathic adopted daughters on a new mission.

As the weekend approaches, the box office showdown between these diverse films promises an exciting mix of genres and stories for moviegoers. Each film brings its unique plot, cast, and appeal to the big screen, setting the stage for a thrilling weekend in cinema. Only time will tell which movie will emerge victorious and claim the top spot at the box office.
