The Sands International Film Festival is an annual event curated by Ania Trzebiatowska, a full-time programmer at Sundance, taking place in St Andrews, Scotland. The festival, which just recently commenced its third edition, is not only a celebration of cinema but also a collaboration with the University of St. Andrews and AGBO, a production company owned by Joe and Anthony Russo. The connection between the Russos and the town is personal, as Joe’s daughter once studied in St. Andrews, adding a familial touch to the proceedings.
One of the highlights of the festival’s opening night was the presence of Tom Holland, known for his role as Spider-Man, who attended alongside his brother Harry to present their collaborative project, “Last Call.” The short film, centered around a mother’s quest to reconnect with her son, resonated with the audience at The Byre Theatre, receiving praise for its emotional depth and storytelling prowess. Interestingly, Harry revealed that the idea for the film came to him during his time assisting on the set of Cherry, a 2021 war film directed by the Russos.
In addition to “Last Call,” the festival showcased a diverse array of films over the weekend. From Anna Hints’ Sundance-winning documentary “Smoke Sauna Sisterhood” to lesser-known gems like Anthony and Joe Russo’s 2002 comedy “Welcome to Collinwood,” starring George Clooney and produced by Steven Soderbergh. The screening of Naqqash Khalid’s debut feature “In Camera” added depth to the lineup, featuring a talented cast including Nabhaan Rizwan, Rory Fleck Byrne, and Amir El-Masry.
A pivotal moment in the festival was the scheduled Q&A session between the Russos and Soderbergh, where they reminisced about their shared history in the industry. Soderbergh, who played a crucial role in the Russos’ early career, producing “Welcome to Collinwood,” engaged in a candid conversation about their journey and the impact of mentorship in the film industry. This exchange not only provided insight into the collaborative nature of filmmaking but also highlighted the importance of paying homage to those who have influenced one’s artistic trajectory.
